Opera/opera role

Question
Hi I am very curious to know why some dramatic sopranos
tend to stay away from roles like Elektra? I have heard
that the orchestra score is grand but is the role that
taxing on the voice? How so?

Answer
Hi Feliciano,

Strauss's music usually has a higher tessitura than traditional "dramatic" roles (Wagner, etc.)  So you do need to have a large enough voice to cut through the orchestra but you also need to be able to handle the higher tessitura.  So most truly dramatic sopranos would not be comfortable with the tessitura.  With Strauss you need the thrilling, brilliant high notes.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Pamela
