Subject: Little lump on eyelid

Question
QUESTION: I had two little lumps on my right upper eyelid. I used some ointment on it and one is getting smaller while the other isn't improving very well. They didn't hurt and its only a little reddish(not swollen). The one that doesn't get better has no pus in it and its not becoming worse either. Its a bit hard but cause no visual disturbance or pain. The problem is, it just doesn't go away no matter what, its been about 5 days and stays the same small size. I cant get hold of any doc now and i don't know what it is. But my right eye was very itchy before the lump grew on my eyelid. Is there any fast home remedy for it? How long does it take?

ANSWER: Dear Lynn,

This could be a swelling in the lids called 'stye'.
You can read more about this on www.shroffeye.org
Hot fomentation helps reduce the swelling.

Dr Shroff

QUESTION: Dear Dr Shroff,

Thank you for your reply. I did use hot compress on the area and the sty stays the same, no pain and no pus. This morning when I woke up, I touched it gently and felt a sharp point at the lump, its a bit hard but doesn't hurt at all. How long does it usually last? Most people say it takes about a week and it seems to be longer in my case.

Thanks.

ANSWER: Dear Lynn,

It can even go on for a few weeks. What is important is not to let it become hard, which would then be chronic and need a small incision to remove the lump. If it stays soft by regular hot compress (often in the day), then it will eventually decrease in size.

Dr Shroff

QUESTION: Dear Dr Shroff:

Does it mean i can keep it soft and small by compressing hot tea bag on it?

Thanks

Lynn

Answer
Dear Lynn,
yes, or you could take hot water in a cup, and use a soft napkin or twoel (clean of course) to repeatedly apply heat on this. Hot enough to make the difference but not burn or scald you.

Also, some days of less fatigue on the eyes like computers used for long hours etc can be avoided as eye strain also causes the stye to arise.

Hope this helps,
Dr Shroff
