Subject: scratched cornea

Question
About 3 weeks ago, my husband got sawdust in his eye. He went to urgent care and they diagnosed him with a scratched cornea, gave him antiobiotic eye drops and told him the pain/blurred vision would go away. The pain and sensitivity to light is gone, but he is still experiencing blurred vision in that eye. Is this normal? How long after a scratched cornea can he expect blurred vision? Also, he had RK surgery in that eye 14 years ago. If the scratch caused permanant damage, would he be able to have corrective surgery after RK surgery?
Thanks!

Answer
Dear Kristeie,

Usually corneal scratches or abrasions are superficial but take a long time to heal, even upto 2-3 weeks in some.
I doubt that it would cause any permanent damage if treated correctly. He may also have been put on some eye drops like homide to dilate the eyes, the effect of which causes blurred vision. Please check this with your treating doctor.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Dr Shroff
