Subject: Histoplasmosis

Question
I have been diagnosed with histoplasmosis.  It originally was found in my lymph nodes and a nodule in my lung (through a PET scan).  The nodule was surgically removed.  I have been put on Itraconazole for 3 months to treat the histo.  Should I be worried about the histo affecting my eyes or do you just wait for symptoms to arise?

Answer
Dear Johanna,

Do not be worried, it does not mean that all cases necessarily will have ocular symptoms, although you must be aware of them and visit your eye specialist once now to ensure that all is well, and then SOS if any symptoms like distorted vision – Straight lines or objects may appear wavy or blurred vision happens

There is usually no discomfort.

Visit an eye specialist in any case for a routine check if not done that already, as the signs usually appear in the retina and need a full dilated check up.

Regards,
Dr Anand Shroff, MS (OPHTH), FICS
