Subject: Uveitis and dental infection

Question
Sir, I am a dentist(Endodontist). I had a patient who was diagnosed as having uveitis due to a dead tooth(non vital tooth). I treated the dead  tooth by doing root canal treatment and now her eye condition has significantly improved. I went through the literature and found out that dental infection especially dead tooth causing uveitis is quite rare. I wanted to know whether you have seen or read any case of uveitis due to a dead or nonvital tooth. If so please let me know or atleast give me a reference of a journal if any case report has been published.

With regards,
Dr.Vasudev Ballal,MDS,PhD

Answer
Dear Dr Vasudev,

Yes, Uveitis is caused by any source of infection. This triggers the inflammatory process in the eyes as well.

Please read more about this on http://www.shroffeye.org/uveitis.htm
I cannot recall any journal offhand, but hope the above information will help.

Best
