Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 11/2/2009
Question We live in a world with great advances in technology,medicine...
I know reduce melanin in iris isn`t a priority theme in ophthalmology but is known people who suffer a change eye color with a melanin reduction with age.
Also is known some compounds as alpha methyl-p tyrosine, some herbal extracts as arbutin and other withening agents which can reduce melanin thatīs why I donīt believe canīt we make eye drops which can be able to reduce some pigmentation in iris and for example get brown to hazel eyes.
What do you think about all about this?Canīt we get a change from brown to hazel eyes?Canīt we make an eye drop with any compound to reduce any melanin production without side effects?
Answer Dear Alberto,
To change colour of the eyes is still easy...to change it to the colour what you are looking for WITHOUT causing any harm is the challenge...also, these procedures do not have any medical approvals.
Melanin pigment of the eyes is there for a reason other than just colour, it is also for protection from ultra violet light which can cause loss of vision if not filtered.
Hence, experimneting with such a vital part of the eye can result in disastrous results from loss or deterioration in vision to even cancer from some checmicals acting as cancer inducing agents.
Hence, until the FDA approves of such procedures, it is best to avoid such lesser accepted procedures.
Hope this helps,
Best,
Dr Anand Shroff
