Ophthalmology & Optometry - ulsers/contact lenses

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 11/2/2009

Question
I have had dry eyes for most of my life.  I have had plugs put in my tearducts.  5 years ago they ok'd it for me to get soft contact lenses as long as I don't wear them for more than 8 hrs. I just found out I have an ulser in my right eye.  They are treating it with Zymar every half hour. He said once it heals that it will leave scar tissue and will not be a candidate for lasik surgery.  He also said that I will never be able to wear contacts again.  Is this realistic?  I am devastated!!

Answer
Dear Missy,

In absence of an eye report and just the basis of your description, it is very difficult for us to comment if this holds true for you.

But yes, in some cases where the cornea can leave a scar deep enough on the eyes, you may not be the ideal candidate for LASIK.
The contact lenses seem to not suit you and those intolerant to the lenses should not 'push their eyes' into using them, because then you are abusing them.

However, since this is a current and recent occurence, I hope that you are being seen by an experienced eye surgeon or corneal specialist who may be able to help save the eye from the effects of the corneal ulcer, and after healing, hopefully you may still consider LASIK OR EPILASIK.

Hope this helps,
Best,
