Ophthalmology & Optometry - Genetic counseling for myopia?

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 6/29/2009

Question
I am a 33 yr old having very high myopia -8 and -10 with .25 astigmatism. My husband has astigmatism -.5 x 80 and -.75 x130 .I have a 3 year old daughter ,we have not have her eyes tested yet, when would you recommend we get her tested? We have not seen anything obvious though.
My second question is a bit tricky. We would like to have another child ,but as it is I am scared for myself and my daughter. The things we read about retinal detachments and other myopia related problems are detering. It seems sooner or later blindness will come some way or the other. My father and mother had around -4 and -2 and I turned out to be a lot worse. Is there anything called 'genetic counseling for myopia'?Is there any hope for myopia in the future?
Thanking you,
A worried mom

Answer
Dear Mom,

Do not worry.

Myopia is not a disease and is increasingly common today with no genetic predisposition as well.

But to answer your specific query...yes, if your daughter has any powers that enable her read better, this will only help improve her development as she grows. Do not procrastinate on this.

There is nothing to worry, sicne after 18 years one can consider LASIK which is extremely safe today.
