Ophthalmology & Optometry - New eyeglasses cause pressure between the eyes, minor headaches

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 6/30/2009

Question
Hello,
I recently purchased new, expensive designer eyeglasses that appear to be quite a bit heavier than my old ones.  When I put them on, I feel pressure between the eyes on the nose bone and get a slight headache.  The best way to explain it is it's almost like the feeling you get when you try to hold back tears before crying, except the pressure is constant and directed toward the bridge of the nose.  The lens strength increased slightly from before (I don't have the prescription numbers on me), but I can see clearly and nothing is blurry.  Also note that I had rhinoplasty done in March 2008, if this has anything to do with it.  I am also 19 so my eyes are about finished changing.  Do you think these problems will subside once I get used to the glasses or should I have the glasses rechecked?  Is it more likely the weight of the glasses that is bothering me or the slight change in prescription?
Thank You

Answer
Dear Amanda,

If the symptoms are absent when you do not wear the glasses, then most defnitily it is due the them. However, if  it is an initial strain that all feel with new glasses, or because the fframe does not fit well, one cannot say. It is you observation and also making sure that you are wearing the correct prescription and fit from your local optometrist which will help.

Best,
Dr Shroff
