Ophthalmology & Optometry - new rx

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 6/30/2009

Question
I had my eye exam last night, has been 3 yrs since last. I am 48 years old and have been noticing the need for added strength in my bifocals for near. I also have noticed problems (while wearing my glasses) with working on the computer. My previous rx was -1.25 (r eye) sphere -.25 cylinder and (l eye) -.75 add 2.25. My new rx reads (r eye) -1.75 sphere -.50 cylinder and (l eye) -1.00 sphere -.50 cylinder with the same add +2.25. I was surprised when I was asked to read the chart with my glasses on and couldn't see much at a distance, but at my age and with the problems I've had thought the presbyopia was progressing, not problems with distance. Isin't this unusual? Do you think the rx is correct?, should I have it filled? Thanks!

Answer
Dear Sherri,

The numbers seem fine if you can read 20/20 or 6/6 with them. That is more important and only your optometrist who is physically checking your numbers would be able to tell you which suits you better by actually showing the difference in vision between the two.

If in doubt, get rechecked by another local optician.
Hope this helps,
Best,
Dr Shroff
