Ophthalmology & Optometry - Blue ring around iris

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/6/2009

Question
In the answer displayed on your web-site it talked about this being genetically predisposed also.  My dad is 90 years old, has had high cholesterol but has it well under control and there has been no difference in the brilliance of this blue ring.  We have no records of his birth as he was supposedly traded on a train because his family could not support another child.  We have a picture of his "supposedly" birth mother that is Indian.  He was traded to a Mexican family that will not reveal any answers.  Is there anyway to know if one of these nationalities is more predisposed than the other?

Answer
Dear Paula,

It is rather difficult to find such data which compares two different nationalities and race.

However, this blue ring is seen commonly in many elderly people (regardless of race) as an age related change which is not pathological. (ie if I have understood your Q correctly...if you have any eye report we could opine on that. please send the same to dranand@lasikindia.in)

Hope this helps,
Best,
Dr Shroff
