About Michael J. Wojciak, O.D.
Expertise
I am an Optometrist with 21 yrs experience. I currently practice primary eye care in Lombard & Schaumburg, Illinois. I specialize in all types of contact lenses. Please forward appropriate questions pertaining to eye exams, glasses or contact lenses only. I will always attempt to be as "specific" as I can on my answers. This is often difficult when the questions do not provide enough information or visual presentation is needed. ***I will reject any question involving self-prescribing of contact lenses or involving contact lens measurements/comparisons (such as changing base curves, measurement comparisons between brands etc). Contact lenses are a medical device and need to be properly fit by your Doctor. Also in respect for patient privacy, I will not answer third party questions, unless a parent or guardian is asking a question about their child.*** I appreciate your confidence.

Question
Two days ago I was poked in the eye. There was immediate pain followed by trouble keeping eye open. The contact in my right eye was dislodged when the incident occurred. I removed my other contact and went to wearing my glasses. It wasn't getting any better and vision seems blurred. I went to my eye doctor, he's an Ophthalmologist and seems to know his stuff. He did an exam including dilatation to check my retina I assume and said he thought that looked ok. He felt the problem was inflammation and prescribed an eye drop to take 4 times a day for two weeks then come back for a recheck.
That night while laying down I noticed a transparent fairly large circle in the center of my vision. When I would close my eye the same circle was there only white. When I open my eye its there again. If I keep my open  the circle does seem to fade. I do not notice it much / if any during the day. I did not notice this before. This symptom is really worrying me. Can an eye poke cause this? What are your thoughts? Should I call the office and mention this symptom or what and see in two weeks when I go back?

Answer
Hi Mark,
This sounds very unusual  If you are getting after images when your eyes are closed, it may have something to do with your retina or optic nerve.  There is no way for me to be sure without having seen you myself.  However, it sounds like the MD prescribed the correct course of treatment.  I would call his/her office ASAP this morning and talk to the nurse or doctor.  Most doctors (at least I do) will say "schedule a one week follow up, but please call right away if something changes or you have any questions.".
I would call this today and bring this too your doctor's attention.
Hope this helps,
Dr. Wojciak
