Ophthalmology & Optometry - Eye Pain with Bell's Palsy

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/1/2009

Question
I am recovering from Bell's Palsy; have had it for 10-1/2 weeks now. My eye still doesn't close completely when I blink, but I can close it if I purposely do so. I have been putting thick lubricant in my affected eye and night and patching it and using re-wetting drops as needed in daytime. The past couple of weeks, I have had a sensation that my actual eyeball is throbbing. I am having some sinus issues and headaches recently, as well. My eye does not appear to be overly red or bloodshot, there is no unusual discharge, but it does itch and burn sometimes the past couple of days. Would Bell's Palsy cause this type of eye pain? Could it be sinus-related? Do you think this is minor eye irritation, or do I need to get it checked out by an opthalmologist?

Answer
Dear Lesa,

Since this pain has not interfered with your vision, and nerve supply of the sinuses around the eyes is common...I would first suggest a GP or a physician's opinion to rule out sinusitis, any dental focus of infection etc, then visit anophthalmologist if all others ar ruled out.

Hope this helps,
Best
Dr Shroff
