Ophthalmology & Optometry - IOL with Restor Bifocal 3rd generation

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/1/2009

Question
I am 53 yearold nearsighted male (having used J&J bifocal disposible contacts for years), who was not able to have lasik surgery due to right eye cataract that developed quite rapidly in last few months as well as left eye cataract in beginning stages.  Doctor suggested IOL with Restor bifocal lens 3rd generation for the right eye then try monovison leaving left eye uncorrected for reading until that cataract fully develops.  I was visiting family in USA for lasik but live in Costa Rica so need to find out if this is available here.  My question is whether is the best option for my situation or whether other lens should be investigated ?  I do both computer, reading and well as driving with fair amount at night.  Also if anyone could be recommended for the procedure.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear James,

Crystalens may be a better option for you. In my experience, Restor gives too many visual symptoms. One eye at a time. As you anyway have a cataract in the other eye too and can have the other eye done anytime later.

Hope this helps,
Best Dr Anand Shroff
