Ophthalmology & Optometry - Preventative laser for retina thinning

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/2/2009

Question
Hello Dr. Shroff,

Can you please tell me if preventative laser treatment on a thinning area of the retina can possibly cause a retina tear (or detactment) to happen in other areas or the same area in the future? I had retina detachment surgery on my left eye and my doctor wants to laser the thinning spot on my right eye because there's a little blood (from being pulled on by the vitreous gel.) Thank you very much.

Milly

Answer
Dear Milly,

Usually quite the opposite! That is one does lasers (Argon) on areas which appear weak or have degeneration to prevent a possibility of a retinal detachment or tear in that area.

However, me not being a retinal expert, can only suggest this. You could write to Dr Rahul Shroff a retinal specialist on shroffeye@vsnl.com for a detailed opinion.

Hope this helps,
Best,
Dr Anand Shroff
