Ophthalmology & Optometry/lack of tears

Question
Hi, 44 yr. old female.....
For the last few months I have been unable to cry (emotional tearing) out of my left eye. Otherwise it doesn't seem dry, no irritation or scratchiness. It's only when I cry. (no overflow of tears). Is this normal, especially it being unilateral?

thanks for any comments

Answer
Dear Mel,

This does require a visit to an ophthalmologist to check the tear ducts etc. A corneal expert or specialist is preferable.

His report will help me guide you better as without any means of being able to examine your eyes, it is rather difficult to comment on the possibilities.

Please write back if you need further help.

Best,
Dr Shroff
