Ophthalmology & Optometry - vision test

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/7/2009

Question
QUESTION:  Hi,  my son 19 years old is trying to sign up for the marines and officer training program,  he needs to retake vision test as he must be 20/400 before correction, he wears contacts and was told he needs to wear glasses for 3 days prior to his testing because of swelling,  i guess they will dilate his eyes also,  my question is will his eyes test better after swelling goes down or better right after he takes contacts out.

thank you

Carl

ANSWER: Dear Carl,

He will need to take his contact out at least a day (for soft lenses) prior to any vision check for accuracy.

The dilation is not for numbers but to check the inside of his eye (retina).

Hope this helps.

Dr Shroff

QUESTION: i know it sounds stupid,  but if he dosnt have them out and only takes out contacts morning of  i understand the accuracy on the Snellen will be off   but question is will the swelling help read chart like squinting or will less swelling help read smaller letters?

Answer
Hi Carl,

There may be no swelling at all, and usually one is able to see the chart even after removing the lens in the same morning.

The accuracyu of giving numbers is better if the impression of the lens is removed which is overnight.

Best Regards,
Dr Shroff
