Ophthalmology & Optometry/Cataracts and drusen

Hi - I'm 64 years old, and have recently been diagnosed with cataracts and drusen, although not macular degeneration (knock on wood!). I had corrective eye surgery when I was seven on one eye, crossed eyes. I am far sighted and have astigmatism. When should I think about cataract surgery, and why should I wait - my vision is already affected, especially when driving or doing close work (reading or needlework) and i think it's making me anxious and depressed! Help!

If you are affected by decreased vision, glare, Halos, difficulty driving or reading and eyeglasses no longer improve your sight to your satisfaction, then you should consider cataract surgery  ,  drusen on the retina is now considered to be early stages of macular degeneration .  You should definitely start anti oxidant eye vitamin nutritional support, stop smoking if you go, diet rich in green leafy vegetables, wear Polaroid sunglasses outdoors, and check for visual distortions on the Amsler Grid regularly.  Hope this helps.   Dr Berger
