Ophthalmology & Optometry - Reading Glass Rx from Bifocal Rx

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 8/18/2007

Question
QUESTION: I have been given a Rx for bifocal
OD: -0.5, -0.5, x095 , 0.75 ADD
OS: Plano

How to get the Rx just for reading glasses out of this.

-PKG

ANSWER: Dear Pradeep,

Seems like just a small 0.75D number for reading. If you are looking at getting just reading glasses (if you are above age 40 years), then you can even walk in the opticians stor and try out their 'over the counter' reading glasses. They will have a full range and are trained to dispensing these.

Hope this helps,
Dr Anand Shroff, MS (OPHTH), FICS

QUESTION: I am 32 yrs old. Somebody else suggested me that I should get the prescription glasses for:

OD: +0.25, -0.5, x095
OS: 0.75

is that correct?

Answer
Dear Pradeep,

Then these are not reading glasses. You may have what is called hypermetropia (+ numbers for distance) and have a small astigmatism (axis numbers) in the right eye. The left eye seems to have a small 0.75 number. The minus means myopia, plus means hypermetropia for far (under 40 years.

The numbers when mixed in plus and minus is called mixed astigmatism, something like what you have written. Please appreciate that I am interpreting the same from the numbers that have been writen by you, I cannot tell if this is the correct number unless you are examined by me.

If based in Mumbai we would be happy to help you out. Please call the hospital on 26431006 or 66921000 or our counsellor Dr Safala on 98211 63901

Thanks,
Dr Shroff
