Ophthalmology & Optometry/lazy eye

Question
Hi,
I am a 30 yr old woman, when I was 12 I was told I had a lazy eye. I wore a patch for several years with no improvement. When I was 16 I switched eye doctors and was told that I didn't need glasses or the eye patch anymore. My Doctor told me that my right eye was compinsating for my left eye and there was nothing more to be done. I have never returned to the eye doctor. Recently I have noticed that my eyes are two different colors and that my vision seems to getting worse in my left eye.
My question is can surgery fix my lazy eye? Why are my eyes two different colors ? Is this from my lazy eye?
Your time and advice are greatly appreciated.
   Thanks,
  Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
No, surgery can not "fix" your lazy eye.  The only remedy may be glasses/contacts and extensive vision therapy similar to what you went through with the patch.  As far as the different colors, I have never heard of an amblyopic eye changing colors.  I strongly recommend you get a complete eye exam if you have not had one in a year.
Hope this helps,
Dr. Mike

Expertise

I am an Optometrist with 25 yrs experience. I currently practice primary eye care in Joliet and Schaumburg, Illinois. I specialize in all types of contact lenses. Please forward appropriate questions pertaining to eye exams, glasses or contact lenses only. I will always attempt to be as "specific" as I can on my answers. This is often difficult when the questions do not provide enough information or visual presentation is needed. ***I will reject any question involving self-prescribing of contact lenses or involving contact lens measurements/comparisons (such as changing base curves, measurement comparisons between brands etc). Contact lenses are a medical device and need to be properly fit by your Doctor. Also in respect for patient privacy, I will not answer third party questions, unless a parent or guardian is asking a question about their child.*** I appreciate your confidence.
