Subject: Wisdom Tooth Pain
Question My left side of my mouth is in major pain. On friday i had to take a day off
work cause my wisdom tooth was in so much pain and my left side of my
face is a bit swollen, i have light headaches too. When i went to the hospital
on friday they gave me some medication; penicillin & some codeine and some
kind of mouth wash, they also gave me an appt to come in wednesday to get
my wisdom tooth extracted. i tried the codeine and im almost sure thats
suppose to numb me so that i dont feel much pain, however, that did'nt work
for anything im still in major pain and this is the third day my pains been
here. I tried to gargle warm salt water and that didnt work, it hurts when i
swollow too. I tried calling the doctor but they r not open on the weekends.
What should i do to relieve some of this pain, ambasol???
Can they extract my wisdom tooth even with an infection around the tooth,
Can they also extract even if it's soar or swollen. I need help ! Im in bad
pain..Thank You. Jess
Answer Jess - First of all, if the doctors are skilled, the wisdom tooth can definitely be removed even with the infection associated with the tooth. As far as relief of pain, until the infection can begin to drain, the pain will remain. I don't know what type of rinsing with the warm salt water you did, but the warm salt water is the best way to establish drainage.
To properly rinse, you need to concentrate the warm salt water in the area of the infection for a minimum of 5 minutes 4-5 or even more times a day. The warm salt water will eventually promote drainage and that will reduce your pain. The more often you rinse, the sooner you will feel better. Don't use the ambesol, it just burns the tissue and can actually cause the infection to expand.
So do the rinsing like I told you and you should feel better within a couple of days.
