I am planning on having a Maxillomandibular Advancement for Sleep Apnea and had some questions. I have found a surgeon who has performed the procedure many times, however, not specifically for sleep disorders. Is the procedure any different depending on the diagnosis? Should I find someone who does this specifically for Sleep Apnea? I am also wondering if there is a risk for long term headaches associated with this surgery. Last, how do I find a board certified surgeon for a second opinion? I am in zip 55060.
Thank you!
Answer David - The surgery for correction of sleep apnea is the same one used to advance a lower jaw for someone born with a developmental imbalance of the upper to lower jaw. Most board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons are being contacted by respiratory physicians to assist in the correction of sleep apnea. I don't personally know surgeons in your area who do this surgery, but I do know that the Mayo Clinic in Rochester does have board certified surgeons who do the surgery.
In your area Dr. Robert Nustad is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Not far from you in Rochester and Minneapolis there are many board certified surgeons. If you want a second opinion, I suggest you go to Mayo.
