Subject: Bone Loss- Extraction?

Question
Hello Dr., I went to the general dentist today for a six month check up- I was told that my molar which was RCT a few years ago has bone lone and a cavity under the crown, the general dentist wants me to see an Oral Surgeon (in house) to have my tooth extracted and have a dental implant placed... I REALLY want to save my tooth IF possible, I am in no pain whatsoever and was wondering whether or not you think I should get a 2nd opinion with an endodontist since it is on my RCT tooth, a periodontist for the bone loss? Or oral surgeon for a different and hopefully tooth saving tx plan... I would really like your opinion on this matter, I know its hard to say without an xray for you to see but please try to steer me in the right direction, I mean, after all I have become attached to my tooth, I don't want to just yank it without a fight, you know?

Please advise, thanks SO much!

Christine

Answer
Christine -  Let me tell you something that I tell all my patients, just because I believe in a certain treatment plan, it does not mean that there are others that would produce a good outcome.  Saying that, I think you should get second opinions re the root canal with the endodontist.  The periodontist might be helpful also.

So go get other opinions, from another surgeon also.  Your final decision will be more comfortable for you.
