Subject: Wisdom Teeth Removed

Question
I got my wisdom teeth out this morning and my mom had to pull over on the way home because I had swallowed so much blood it made me sick.  The same thing happened when I was home and trying to drink some apple juice.  Finally I have been able to keep gatorade down and the bleeding stopped after changing the gauze 3 times. I have some pain which I know is probably normal but the only swelling I feel is at the bottom of my gums/jaw on the inside below the bottom two teeth.  Is there any risk of infection since I was sick twice after getting them removed? Is lower swelling normal due to the force of gravity?

Answer
Ruthanne-  Swelling after the removal of wisdom teeth is very common.  You are totally correct is assuming the swelling will be affected by gravity and can be below the tooth.

I don't know your postoperative instructions, but the best way to eliminate the swelling is to begin a regimen of warm salt water rinses for about 5 minutes 3-4 times a day.  The rinsing will actually increase you blood flow in the area and the body will work to eliminate the swelling.  At this point, do not use ice or heat to the outside of your face as that can now enhance the swelling.

I wish you the best and hope the swelling gets better soon and you feel well.  If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me again.
