Oral Surgery - infection after a root canal
Expert: Joel S. Teig, DMD, FABOMS - 11/5/2009
Question I had a root canal last week and have had very severe pain since then. I am on antibiotics but now have swelling of my face and still a lot of pain. My medical doctor thinks the sinuses are infected as well. What should I do and who is best to treat this condition?
Thank you.
Elaine
Answer Elaine - When a root canal tooth is infected and all of the bacteria is not allowed to drain before the tooth is filled, the infection often grows into the bone and causes the swelling you are now experiencing. It is important that you have the area drained to allow the trapped bacteria to come out. You need to see a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon to drain the infection. Do not wait. If left, the infection can spread. I wish you well and hope you feel better soon.
