Oral Surgery/dental procedures showing up on technetium scan

Question
QUESTION: I had a tooth extraction almost 10 months ago. Would the bone healing process still be active enough to light up on a Technetium scan?

During the extraction a root tip was broken and left in my jaw. An oral surgeon removed it about 5 months ago. Would the bone healing process following this procedure still be active enough to light up on a Technetium scan?

I was still having problems and had a sequestrectomy and debridement/curettage about 3 months ago. A bone fragment and granulation tissue was removed. Would any bone healing process following these procedures still be active enough to light up on a Technetium scan?

ANSWER: Hello Bob,

I think the ideal way to check bone healing would be a CT scan or a Cone beam CT more adequate than a technitium Scan. After 3 months, you should be completey healed.

QUESTION: Thank you for your quick reply. I don't want to check on bone healing. I want to know if bone healing would possibly interfere with a Tc scan as long as 12 months after extraction, 5 months after a root tip removal, and 3 months after a sequestrectomy. The bone scan is to look for an infection, but I'm worried about bone replacement giving a false positive.

Answer
There will not be any interference but a Tc Scan will only "light up" in view of an acute inflammatory problem not a chronic infection for instance on such a small area. I don't know why your oral surgeon is not capable to assess if you are healing fine or not! This should be a straightforward clinical assessment.
