Subject: smoking
Question My husband has PKD. Is he eligible for transplant if he's a smoker? Make any difference if the donation comes from me? If not, how long will he have to have been off cigarettes? Thanks.
Answer The doctors believe so. While it's true that smoking didn't initially hurt your husband's kidneys, the doctors are often concerned with high blood pressure - which is caused by smoking. Another issue is intubating a smoker - it is not as easy as a non-smoker (due to the phlegm factor). Any given hospital would tell you six months. I would ask if it matters to them if it's you. However, there are risks that come with smoking.
Unfortunately, smoking is NOT easy to stop, and I really wish that doctors would stop making it seem so "easy"!
Good luck to you and your husband. I just wish everyone received a kidney who needs one. I also think you are a great person for offering. That is a gift that means more than anything.
Thank you from me.
