Organic Gardens - Organic fertilizer petunias

Expert: Mack Jean - 5/26/2009

Question
Can you please recommend an organic fertilizer for wave petunias? I have planted what I hope will be a beautiful flower bed this summer and have read that wave petunias like to be well fed. Since I don't want to use chemical fertilizer what organic options are there to help my plants thrive? Thanks a bunch -- as in a bunch of flowers!

Answer

Dear Jennifer:

To keep up with the fast, sprawling growth of wave petunias; apply organic fertilizer monthly or every couple of weeks. If you prepared the soil well, a liquid feed of hydrolyzed fish emulsion and seaweed extract should keep your petunias happy. Yellow leaves signal the need for nitrogen. Apply a good slow-release or heavy one-time application of organic fertilizer.  Check the following website for organic fertilizers:

Both Sustane and Milorganite are balanced organic fertilizers that will work with annuals and perennials. Keep in mind that organic fertilizer is much slower to release and plants might not produce quite as much growth or flowers.
