Organic Gardens - green beans

Expert: Mack Jean - 6/16/2009

Question
Hi Mack we are getting tons of small holes in the leaves of our green beans. I read you suggested using pyrethrin/rotenone on them is that stuff natural and or safe and is there an organic method we can try

Answer
Dear Mike:

Pyrethrin/rotenone are chemical gardening controls which are extracted from plants.  However, these chemicals have their caution side including the toxicity to beneficial insects such as lady beetles.

I suggest you consider using cayenne pepper spray which is an effective organic deterrent for bugs on your green beans.

Here's the recipe:

Red Pepper Spray for insect control

2 TBSP Red pepper (i.e. Cayenne
pepper from spice section at your grocery)
6 drops of dishwashing liquid
1 gallon warm water

Mix thoroughly and pour into spray bottle for application.  Suggest twice weekly or more depending on your particular infestation.

Sincerely,

Mack Jean
