Organizing Your Home & Workspace - Organizing Hunting Materials

Expert: Jan Hayner - 3/25/2009

Question
My husband is an avid deer and turkey hunter.
I have tried to organize all of his calls, clothes, and other items he deems necessary to hunt.  Needless to say, my ideas didn't go over so well.  I am searching for a way to neatly organize his things in our bedroom, but I don't want it to have the "look" of a manly storage unit.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Belinda;
I am glad to hear that there are more wives out there like me. I also have a hunter!!! Man do I have a hunter!

Luckily for me, we have a BIG house and a great family room that looks like a log cabin. However, this idea will work in any home, I am sure.

Let me give you a run down of my home and I am sure you will get some great ideas. I get compliments all of the time, especially from MEN!
Our home is their dream home.

The living room is done in 'Southwest' and looks more Indian than anything. There is a fireplace that has the deer head above it.

Then, I hung his bows and arrows on one wall, put up some wicker baskets in corners holding the wood and starter wood.

On the walls I have the bows, a childs (play) bow and arrow, a clock with deer on it, some accessories have wolves, bears and cactus.

There are two black candle stands on the coffee table with a wicker basket with potpourri in it and a clay jug. I bought some doilies at the dollar store for on all of the tables to make everything blend together and have dried flowers in some vases.

I purchased two hurricane lamps that I have colored oil in just to add more color to the room (this is nice when it is lit on cold winter nights too! I have a blanket and throw pillow on the sofa that has Indians on it, just to add a little something.

I have added his 'calls' in a small glass enclosed case on one end table (so the grandkids don't touch them) and some pictures of Indians, his big deer hunting trip and a few with deer and wolves.

My Family room has two deer, seven fish, two bear, a old muzzle loader gun and ammunition thing hanging on the walls. I also have a bear that is mounted in a decorative floor mounting (she is a small mama bear). My husband dabbles in taxidermy, so he has done all of these himself.

My furniture didn't blend in with the country look, so I got slipcovers in browns and greens to make it look better.

I have an old wood crate that I use in the corner of the room to put a large vining ivy plant on, three stacking cheese crates in another corner that also double as holders for some of his hunting stuff that I don't have any idea of where to go with.

I have his hunting clothes on a hanger in a 'corner' of the room (that hangs on the wall), with his boots on the floor (right below his clothes) with artificial ivy in them.

I have two pillows and a throw blanket on the long sofa that has wolves on it and adds that lodge look to blend everything together. His guns are in a gun case in the corner and I stuck a childs stuffed bear and deer in there so it doesn't make me cringe when I look at all of the guns.

I also hung a rubber snake coming off of one of the pictures, a rubber mouse peeking out of his straw house, on the top of the TV and three ivy plants to add color near the windows.

I had him build a small closet in the garage for the rest of his hunting stuff, but this way, enough of it is displayed that it makes him happy and most of the men that walk in my home too.
My dining room is between both of these rooms and I have that decorated in apples and it blends both of the rooms together.

In one of the bedrooms, I decorated it according to his 'fishing' season. I have four fishing rods hanging on one wall, a wicker thing I think they use to put bait in (or maybe fish??) two fish on the wall that are swimming around driftwood and a piece of driftwood with artificial ivy on the nightstand for decoration.

The lamps that I use in this room look like lanterns, but I also had other lamps in hear and all I did was wrap a few pieces of twine around them and tie the twine in a bow to make it look rough and outdoorsy.

His one tackle box is on top the the chest, open with some of the pretty lures hanging and draped off of the sides with a couple of rubber fish lying around it for decoration.

In one corner of the room I have some netting (which is actually his 'smelt net') that I have sea shells lying in.
The rest of the house is mine to decorate the way I want, But I use what I call 'country colors' (red, cranberry, green, gold, brown, blue)to make it all blend in.

I hope this gave you some ideas, just use them to decorate and you won't have to hunt around for storage space.

Happy organizing,
Jan Hayner
