Orthodox Judaism - Pork

Expert: Rav Ovadiah - 10/16/2008

Question
I have read about Somali Muslims who have refused to handle pork in their jobs. Is there anything in halacha that would restrict an orthodox Jew from handling pork?

Answer
Touching the carcass of an unclean beast results in ritual impurity (and would prohibit entry into the Temple until purity had been regained)-Leviticus 5:2. As such, a pious Jew should not handle pork or other unclean animals. Thanks for your question.
