Orthodox Judaism - the banners and gems representing each of the 12 tribes

Expert: Rabbi Yechezkel Fox - 7/14/2009

Question
Hi,

When the 12 tribes left Egypt, each had its own banners and the precious stones on the High Priest's garments contain 12 gems representing each of the 12 tribes.

Would you happen to know what are the banners of the 12 tribes and which stones are they represented by?

And are there any special or spiritual significance being attached to these stones?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Al,
Here is the info you wanted for each tribe. No.1 is the emblem on the flag 2. is the colour of the stone (I'm only giving you the colour because the actual name of the stone is subject to much disagreement, whereas the colour is more accepted) and 3 is the special quality of that stone. Here goes:-
Reuven 1. Mandrakes 2. Red 3. Prevents miscarriages
Shimon 1. City of Sh'chem 2.Green 3.Helps controls passions
Levi 1.Breastplate 2.Multicoloured and sparkling 3. Instills wisdom
Yehuda 1.Lion 2. Greenish brilliant 3.Makes enemy retreat
Yissachar 1.Sun and moon 2.Skyblue 3.Good for eyesight
Zevulan 1.Boat 2.White 3. Success in business
Dan 1.Snake 2. Reflected the image of a person upside down 3.
Naftali 1. Deer 2.Agate 3. Prevented you from falling off a horse
Gad 1.Army 2.Jasper 3. Strengthens courage
Asher 1. Olive tree 2 Sea blue 3 Aids digestion
Yoseph 1. Menashe - Unicorn, Ephraim - Bullock 2.Diamond 3.Hels find grace
Binyamin 1. Wolf 2. Multicoloured 3.Helps keep secrets
All the best,
Rabbi Yechezkel Fox
