Orthodox Judaism - Oil

Expert: Rav Ovadiah - 5/16/2007

Question
Q-Re Shemot 30, 31… Is this done today also, if so how?

30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto Me in the priest's office

31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying: This shall be a holy anointing oil unto Me throughout your generations.

Answer
Since the destruction of the Second Temple, we have lost the direct lineal descent of the Kohanim. As such, this process is no longer done. This is, however, the basis of the laying on of hands found in the ordination of Rabbis and also many Christian Ministers. Thanks for the question. Shalom!
