1. لغت نامه معین
Does the word Ma’in mean something, or is it simply the name of the compiler of the dictionary?
2. آوا
My dictionary says that this is short for a:va:z, voice – but would “pronunciation” perhaps be a better translation?
3. پشت آن
Would this a:n refer to the door? In that case,
پشت آن
perhaps would mean “behind which”, would it?
4. به وقت شستن بر او زنند
The main problem here is “bar u” – does this mean something like “with which”?
I take it that “dar vaqt-e-shostan” simply means “at the time of washing”, “when you wash” (clothes) etc.

1. Moi:n is the name of compiler of the dictionary; however, the word per se means companion, assistant, and fellow.
2. that is right. Pronunciation is a better translation. In fact, short vowels are usually written in that part.
3. a:n refers to the door.
4. bar o: means on it; that is, pasha:vand is a board on which cloths are struck while they are washed.
Be careful not to be misled by Persian dictionaries. Their language is a bit old and complicated; besides, there used some archaic words in definitions. As a case in point, گازر (ga:zor) is an obsolete word, which you can find in the definition of pasha:vand, which is outdated itself.
