Very interesting, these two words for “garden” (باغ ، بوستان). Please could you tell me the difference between them?
بوستان “bu:sta:n" would seem literally to mean “the place of smell(s)” – so would that be mainly a flower garden? It's very interesting that you have such a word – perhaps smell played a much greater part in gardening in Iran then than today in the West.
باغ “ba:gh” is similar to the Turkish word for “vineyard”, so is it also the Persian word for “vineyard”, please?
You also have باغچه “ba:ghche” – the diminutive of باغ “ba:gh”? So does that simply mean “little garden”?

All you said about bu:sta:n or its short form bosta:n is perfectly right. بوستان “bu:sta:n" literally means “the place of smell(s)”. It is mainly a flower garden with nice- smelling- fruit bearing trees such as apple, sour orange, Persian apple, etc.
Ba:gh is a more general word and is used commonly in everyday speaking. However, these two words are widely used interchangeably. Ba:ghche, as you said, is a smaller garden; even very small ones, such as the planting area in yards of houses, are called ba:ghche.
The special words for vineyard are تاکستان ta:kesta:n, موستان moesta:n, and رزستان razesta:n in order of commonness. تاک Ta:k=مو mo (the pronounciarion is diferrent from mo: which means hair)= رزraz = vine or grapevine.
