According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persepolis Chehel Mi:na:r is an alternative name for Persepolis. Now, “chehel” is no problem as it simply means “40”, but what does Mi:na:r mean, please?
(I use : to indicate a long vowel.)
Also, what is the most usual name used by the Persian people for “Persepolis”, please?
All the best,
Simon
Answer Hi Simon
Sorry for my late to answer your question. My computer has beed damaged.
People called Perspolice "Chehel menaar" many years ago, nearly 50 years ago. Now all call it "Takht -e - Jamshid". "Mi:na:r" or "Menaar" is a part of mosque in Islamic archtecture. It is like a column that a man go up og it and shut for praying. But before Islam there are some "Menaar"s for lighting up the fire above them for guiding the passengers in deserts. ( like a pharos). Before excavation in Perspolice, People thought the stone columns were stone "Menaar".
