About Behzad
Expertise
I can answer questions about the usage and meaning of Persian words, proverbs, and idioms asked in Persian or English. Controversial grammatical issues are beyond my knowledge. In addition, I cannot corroborate my answer to a question about newly coined slang words. PLEASE do not ask me to translate more than 1 or 2 sentences.

Experience
Persian language is my mother tongue; however, my knowledge is remarkably more than a mere native speaker.

Education/Credentials
BSc In Mechanical Eng.

Question
Hi Behzad,

Please could you explain exactly what this means as a phrase and also the individual words which make it up?

Seems complex...

Best wishes,

Simon

Answer
Hello Simon,
It means being subject to something
Example 1: مورد حمله قرار گرفتن (morede hamle ghara:r gereftan)
It means: being attacked
کشور آنها مورد حمله دشمن قرار گرفته است. (keshvare A:nha: morede hamle ghara:r gerefte ast)
Translation: Their country has been attacked by the enemy.

Example 2: مورد حمله قرار دادن (morede hamle ghara:r da:dan)
It means: to attack
روزنامه ها او را مورد حمله قرار دادند. (ro:zna:meha: o: ra: morede hamle ghara:r da:dand)
Translation: Newspapers made her the butt of their attack.

Example 3:   مورد تردید قرار گرفتن (morede tardi:d ghara:r gereftan)
It means: being doubted
صداقت آنها مورد تردید قرار گرفت.   (seda:ghate a:nha: morede tardi:d ghara:r gereft)
Translation: Their honesty was doubted.

Example 4: مورد تحسین قرار گرفتن (morede tahsi:n ghara:r gereftan)
It means: being praised
تلاشهای او مورد تحسین بسیاری قرار گرفت. (tala:shha:ie o: morede tahsi:ne besi:iari: ghara:r gereft)
Translation: Her efforts were praised greatly.

Mored= case, object, item, instance, situation (in combination with other words its meaning may change)
In fact, مورد (mored) and ورود (voro:d), meaning entrance, are derivatives of a same root; therefore, according to the Arabic grammar, mored means place or time of entrance. The correct pronunciation of mored, according to the Arabic rules, is maured (“mau” is to be pronounced like mou in the English word “mouth”. Nevertheless, the original meaning of mored is not used in contemporary Persian. Moreover, the meaning of mored in phrases such as مورد چیزی قرار گرفتن (morede chi:zi: ghara:r gereftan) cannot be translated exactly to “case” or “object”; instead, it implies the subjection of something to another thing.

Chi:zi:= something

Ghara:r  gereftan= to be placed, to settle, to rest

Best regards,
Behzad
