Question
Dear Mojtaba,

Many thanks again for another excellent answer.

Recently I've met two women here called Figen, and I gather that there is a Persian word فگن meaning “overthrowing” or something like that. I suppose the idea is that girls with that name become so beautiful that they bowl men over?

Is it used at all in the modern language? Perhaps as a suffix? Is it used in names? How is it pronounced exactly?

All the best,

Simon

Answer
Hi Simon,

فگن is the "Present Root" (بن مضارع) of the verb فگندن; However, افگندن with the present root of افگن had been vastly being used, instead. Also said: فکندن and افکندن.

This verb by itself is not actually used in today's Persian. But as you correctly said, it is still used as a suffix. For example: نور افکن is what does the act of افکندن upon the نور. Something which drops the light; floodlight, spotlight, searchlight.

فگن and فکن are pronounced this like: /fegan, fekan/

I have no idea about the origination of the name you mentioned, "Figen". This doesn't look to have anything to do with افکندن. But it's just my theory - while this name is not Persian.

Hope this helps.
With Best Regards, Mojtaba Parsa.
