Question
QUESTION: Dear Mojtaba,

Can you please translate this video to English? If it is too much can you please translate a few sentences?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_I4-edQA9w

Thank you,

Ju

ANSWER: Hi Ju,

Very bad accent, really difficult to understand!

Translation:

...you see the bloody head of Hussain on the lance. O my sister, be patient injustice will be ruined, o my sister. My household inmates cry due to the father's death, Ommo Kolsüm stressfully will cry out sorrowfully, o my sister. If they see you as you are worried, stressful and crying out, both lips of our enemy will get into the shape of smiling and happiness, o my sister.

The army of anger will get you as hostage prisoners and the sorrowful Sham will be your place to live, o my sister. Now is when it is the turn of the sword of the tongue. It will be as sharp as the martyrs' blood, o my sister.

BTW I became curious to know why you wanted to know what this guy says!

Anyway hope this helps.

QUESTION: Dear Mojtaba,

Thank you very much for your help. I like to learn about different religions. Can you please tell me the meaning of 'Ommo Kolsüm' and 'Sham'?

Also can you please tell me is there any special name for this kind of matam and does it occur only on special days such as the Day of Ashura or throughout the year? Is this a mosque in Iran?

Thank you

Ju

Answer
Hi Ju,

Though these themes have something to do with the religion, they have actually become pertaining to the culture more than to the religion.

'Ommo Kolsum' was Hussain's sister (Ali's daughter).
'Sham' has several meanings: 1. What people eat as dinner (nights); 2. Start of the night, after-evening; 3. What today we call 'Syria', formerly was called 'Sham'.
It seems that 'Sham' refers to this place in the poem. So I indicated it by capital S.

Several titles for such a ceremoney are used.
عزاداری، مرثیه، نوحه، مراسم سینه زنی، لحن الحزین،...

Pronunciations:
azä däri, marsie, nohe, maräsem e sine zani, lahn ol hazin

There are many days during the year in which Iranian people go mourn, like anniversary of martyrdom or death of Shia leaders (the Imams), Mohamad, Zahra (Ali's wife), Ayatollah Khomeyni (leader of Islamic Revolution), etc. Some are performed more intense than some other. For example, mourning on Ashura is absolutely more severe than on Islam's prophet's anniversary.

Also during the first 10 days of the month 'Moharram' (10 days before Ashura Day), people constantly keep on performing lamentations days and nights - at the mosques or streets.

And this might be whether a mosque or a 'Hoseynie'. The Hoseynies usually are greater than mosques and fewer in amount.

Hope this helps.
With Best Regards, Mojtaba Parsa
