AboutBehzad Expertise I can answer questions about the usage and meaning of Persian words, proverbs, and idioms asked in Persian or English. Controversial grammatical issues are beyond my knowledge. In addition, I cannot corroborate my answer to a question about newly coined slang words.
PLEASE do not ask me to translate more than 1 or 2 sentences.
Experience Persian language is my mother tongue; however, my knowledge is remarkably more than a mere native speaker.
Please could you explain the following phrase?
البته در جوی کاملا خودمانی
This phrase is added on to a sentence describing how two female servants gossip while doing the hair and nails of their mistress.
Is this the same جوی as that which means “brook, stream”?
Also, re خودمانی, my dictionary says it means "familiar", but how can we analyse the word? Khod plus emaani or khod plus euphonic e plus maani? In any case, what does the second element mean?
All the best, and many thanks,
Simon
PS Ah, just a thought - could خودمانی be خودم (myself) plus adjectival ending انی?
Answer Hello Simon,
البته در جوی کاملا خودمانی means “in a friendly (informal and intimate) atmosphere, of course”.
When جو is pronounced jav it means atmosphere, and when it is pronounced jo: it means brook. Barley is also جو but it is pronounced jo.
خودمانی is, I think but not 100% sure, خود + مان + ی . I cannot give an explanation what does each part exactly add to the meaning. However, خودمان means ourselves or our own.
خودمانی means informal(ly) and friendly (in a friendly way) which is not used only for first person plural.
Example: علی با آنها خیلی خودمانی حرف می زند.
Translation: Ali talks to them very informally and intimately.
Best wishes,
Behzad
