About Behzad
Expertise
I can answer questions about the usage and meaning of Persian words, proverbs, and idioms asked in Persian or English. Controversial grammatical issues are beyond my knowledge. In addition, I cannot corroborate my answer to a question about newly coined slang words. PLEASE do not ask me to translate more than 1 or 2 sentences.

Experience
Persian language is my mother tongue; however, my knowledge is remarkably more than a mere native speaker.

Education/Credentials
BSc In Mechanical Eng.

Question
Hi Behzad,

نرمين is the name of a Turkish friend of ours (spelt Nermin in Turkish).

Is the –in a kind of diminutive ending? Can you think of any commonly-used examples of its use, please?

Would you ever use نرمين to actually mean something, or is it purely a name in Persian?

All the best,

Simon

Answer
Hello,

-in means made of, look like, or, in general, related.
Examples:
Cho:bin = wooden
Mi:khe A:hani:n = iron nail
Sangi:n = heavy
Namaki:n = salty
Shi:ri:n = sweet
Nangi:n = disgraceful

It is not used as a diminutive in Persian.
I could not find نرمین in Persian dictionaries and have never heard it. The closest word that I can think of is نرمینه (pronounced narmi:ne instead of nermi:ne) which means something soft and is not used commonly.
I have heard the name نارمین na:rmi:n for Persian girls which I do not know what it means and am not sure whether it is related to that Turkish name. It might be a non-Persian but still an Iranian name; Turkish and Kurdish names are common for Iranian girls.

Best regards,
Behzad
