Experience Played since Starcraft Original. Seasoned player. Seen all sorts of tactics played and counters. I've played with people at the top level and also entered different competitions, winning prizes as well. My speciality is more in the 1vs1 area, though I've participated in 2v2 and also 3v3 competitions before. I have also officiated the 1st World Cyber Games Competition (Singapore) in 2001.
Question I am a pretty good Starcraft player, but of recent, I have been having a little trouble.
I play in a LAN match with 5 other people. One of them plays as Zerg. He tends to crush the rest of us anyway, but I find that it is most difficult to defend when he destroys us with a mutalisk rush.
When I am Protoss, I tend to get a lot of Dragoons to beat the Mutalisks, but it isn't enough.
When I'm Terran, I go for Goliaths.
As Zerg, I try to get lots of Hydralisks to beat him.
None of these strategies work.
Can you help me beat the Mutalisk rush?

Mutalisks are "small unit type". Dragoon deals about 50% damage to them. Hydralisks too.
Therefore it is better to use other units to counter them specifically.
THere are a few things in the protoss arsenal that trashes mutalisks.
(1) Cosair (Trashes them)
(2) High Templars (Storm kills every unit well)
(3) Archons (Their splash kills mutalisks very well too)
It's always good to use a mixture of units.
Throw in a few cosairs or high templars to your dragoons and they'll work well.
Mutalisks are mainly fast and fly, thus they are hard to catch. Cosairs counter that the best. (You'll need a group of cosairs) And since mutalisks come as a bunch, the splash damage of cosairs make short work of them.
A good zerg player will try to spread our their mutalisks. The way to go around it is to pull back your cosairs slightly... make the mutalisks chase you.. that will bunch up their mutalisks again. Then shoot them and trash the crap out of them. ^^
