PC Strategy Games - Protoss vs 7 random comp

Expert: Denny Lin - 3/3/2009

Question
Hi,

I'm trying to win Protoss vs 7 random comp in The Hunters map. I tried a couple of times, always failing at the same point, let me describe a typical game: I block choke point with  1 gateway/ 8-12 cannons(rebuilding them as they get destroyed)/ couple of pylons, to hold comp until I can get carriers (rushing tech to get them).

Problem is: When terran comp come with tank, I usually have 1-2 carriers (second not full of interceptors), which is just not enough to kill the tanks fast enough.
Result: The tanks are able to destroy enough cannons and  the trillions of ennemy units enter my base.

Am I just too slow to get carriers? Or using a wrong strategy?

Thx

Answer
Hi Nic,

You're half right to say you are not getting carriers fast enough. This can be due to several reasons.

You may want to try the following.

(1) Build 1 pylon, 1 gateway to block the bottleneck.
(2) Also build your Forge there, to completely block the neck using the pylon, gateway + forge.  (this is possible)

With this, build about 3-4 canons behind the gateway.
BUild an assimilatr and start harvesting gas. You need lotsa gas for carriers, thus it's important to get early gas rather than wait till u get 8-12 canons.
THe 3-4 canons early on is enough to hold the initial rush.

As you tech up, you'll find that you have many extra minerals. Use these recsources to build up more canons, before the hydralisk rush comes. (Slowly add canons, with extra minerals)

Build only 1 cybernatics core 1st. You may add the 2nd later for upgrades.

NExt up, get up only 2 stargates. DOn't rush to get too many at the start.
2 stargates will be enough for the start.
As resources pile up, then build more stargates.
Upgrade the Extra interceptor capability ASAP. Try to upgrade AIr unit attack at the cybernatics core early too.

Avoid upgrading shields too early. Wait till you have more carriers before you start on that, as it requires alot of gas to kick that off.

By the time the 1st tank comes, you should have at least 4-6 carriers.

Target the seiged tank with ALL your carriers, and shift click back to your base. Just kill the tank and retreat.

By the time the 2nd stronger wave of tanks come, you should have at least 10-12 carriers. By now it should be rather easy for you.

Once you have 12 carriers, start attacking, by flying from the side and taking out his workers/base.
AVoid head on battles, and take it slow.

You may wish to throw in 1-2 arbitars, an observer and also maybe even cosairs with disruption web towards the end of the game.

Good luck...

Denny
