Expert: Rider Date: 1/27/2008 Subject: CPU fan spins and stops on power-up
Question Hi. I'm building a new computer and am trying to troubleshoot this problem. I have a feeling that either the motherboard or the CPU need to be replaced, but I thought I'd post here before I start sending parts back.
Parts:
Intel DG965WH motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 processor
I originally installed the motherboard in the case but have since removed it and am bench-testing on cardboard. I have the 12x2 power cable attached to the board and the 2x2 cable as well. When I power up the machine the CPU fan spins momentarily and stops. The power LED on the motherboard stays lit. If I remove the memory I get the 3 beeps from the motherboard as expected, but I get no POST beeps at all with the memory plugged in.
Any suggestions? If something is fried, do you think it's most likely the motherboard or the CPU?
Thank you!
Answer I just went throught this exercise myself when I upgraded my system. It could be the motherboard, processor, or memory.
Try this:
You know the motherboard will beep with out the memory removed, put in one module, remove the video card (unless it is embedded) and see if it beeps.
My guess is that you have the wrong memory modules, take the package and go to Intel's web site, look up your motherboard and see what memory is recommended.
I upgraded my main computer with a new ASUS P5K motherboard, Core 2 Duo E4500 (plan on going to a Quad in a couple of months) and 2 gig of ram. I used the spec's on the web site where I bought the motherboard to buy the memory. (Wrong memory was specified on the web site!) I called ASUS tech when I couldn't figure it out, we went through the above steps twice, I sent the motherboard back to ASUS, they sent me another motherboard. But the memory was the wrong type even though the orginal motherboard was bad when I recived it. I went to a local Electronics store and bought the correct memory, the system came right up.
So check the motheboard web page make sure you have the correct memory before contacting Intel's Support!
