Subject: Noisy Computer
Question Hi Rider,
Firstly, thank you for taking my question.
I have an Acer Aspire E380 desktop, which I purchased a few months ago. It works great. My only problem is, it's noisy!
The desktop makes a loud humming sound when the computer's first starting up. It's not a clicking, scratching, grinding or anything like that. I would describe it as being like something revving up. It builds, gets loud, runs for a short time and then stops. After that point, the desktop's quiet as a mouse. The only time it does this again is when I start certain programs, like my Elders Scrolls game, and it's still not every time.
Could this just be a case of a gunked up fan? I've been meaning to get a can of compressed air and start cleaning in there. That said, it almost sounds like it might be coming from toward the front of the computer case. I'm really nervous that it could be an impending hard drive failure.
Thanks,
Jay
Answer Some computers, especially servers, have two speed fans, when the system starts the fan(s) go to max speed until the OS starts and a program installed by the manufacture ruduces the fan speed. Yours maybe controled by the BIOS. When heat builds up inside the computer then the fan speeds up again.
You may want to contact Acer and see if your fan is operating properly, it should be loud but not unconfortable if you are close to the computer.
