Question
I have an IBM laptop 21e 600Mhz speed with the last bios upgrade in 2003.  I aquired a 21t 750Mhz speed step tecnology computer with a smaller screen that I was told was flakey and the bios was 1999.
I thought I would steal the faster processor and stick it in the one with the bigger screen, but it still saig 600 Mhz celron.  I took the chip from the bottom of the computer that had the 2 little cables on one side and the edge connector on the other, it said Intel, isn't this the processor?  How do I get the slow computer to read the faster chip?  I didnt try to actually use it, I just went to the bios screen to check the speed.  None of the speed readings in the bios are changable.  The 600 also has a 256 mb memory limit, the 750 does not, so I don't know if that can be fixed.  The location of all the doors and battery are different on the two, so a total board swap is not possible

Thanks,
Jeff

Answer
When you open the case of the laptop the processor is under a 'heat sink'. Normally this will be copper with fins, and maybe a fan on top of it, once you remove the heat sink you will see the processor, it will be a green PCB board with a chip on the top. It is in a socket, on the side of the socket (going from the T30 I have) there is a lever on the keyboard side of the socket. Unlock the the lever and lift it, the processor is now loose you should be able to lift it out of the socket.

I don't know if the 21e and the 21t processors are compatable, they should both be PIII's but the FSB (Front Side Bus) speed may be different.

If the FSB is different then the system will not power up. If they are the same then you could possibly upgrade the 600 MHZ to 750.
