PC hardware--CPU & Motherboard & RAM - Replace HD

Expert: Rider - 1/28/2008

Question
I recently had the HD on my work laptop crash.  Because it is out of warranty my company said I can do what I want with it.  I have a docking station and all the other peripherals I need but I'd need to replace the HD.  It is a Dell Latitude (Model PP04S).  My question is this.. is it a major deal to swap out the HD?  I'm assuming the HD comes completely blank which means I'd need to buy all the software to support including the OS?  HD's I've priced out have ranged between $115 and $300.  Is it worth replacing it or should I consider it a lost cost and cheaper to just buy a new laptop?

Thanks for your advice.

Answer
A hard drive plus the Operating System is a lot cheaper than a new computer.

Considering you have the docking station for it, and all the extra peripherals. They may work with a newer model but then again you would have to get the part number from the docking station and go to Dells web site and check if a new computer would be compatable.

Another option you have if you want to buy a new system with everything already loaded would be to put the old system up on eBay for sale at what you think is a reasonable price. Then you could recoup part of the cost of a new computer.
