Question
My system information is as follows:
                                  OS:Microsoft windows xp
                         PROCESSOR INFO:intel(R)pentium 4
                                              2.66 GHZ
                VIDEO DEVICE:ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 SERIES
                  PHYSICAL MEMORY:446 MB

I BROUGHT THE PC IN 2005.RECENTLY I AM FACING THE PROBLEM AS THE PC HAS RESTARTING FREQUENTLY..WITHOUT SHUTING DOWN..AS IF I AM OPENNING THE PC.ALSO..I CANNOT CONTINUE MY WORK WITH ANY APPLICATION AS THEY ARE GIVING AN ERROR MESSEGE TELLING "(APPLICAION BE IT MSWORD,OR MEDIA PLAYE,OR ANY APPLICATION)HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEED TO BE CLOSED",THUS CREATING A HORRIBLE SITUATION.IF U CAN PROVIDE ME ANY HELP WITH UR KIND ADVICE IT

Answer
You face two problems.
1- More than likely you have a bad virus infection.
2- Your Operating System may be corrupt.

You need to clean out the virus before you can do anything else.

Start the system in 'Safe Mode' run your anti virus, anti trojan, and anti spyware progams and clean the system.

Once you have removed the infections restart and see if the system can sustain normal operations, if it is still restarting then you will need to back up your data and reinstall the Operating System.
