Question
Can I hook up an external display on laptop with out os on the hard drive ? Lcd displays vert lines top to bottom in center of bright screen I need to see errors& text to install os to hardrive .

Answer
Yes, when you connect the moitor to the laptop the port is on the back, it is blue, and has three rows of pins.

After connecting, on the key board press the Fn button and the F7 key, this will cycle the monitor displays from laptop to laptop/external monitor to blank then external monitor [it has been a long time since I did this so the sequence may not be correct].

Your vertical lines are caused by the inverter insidd the video case or the srceen has broken connections. You may be able to find replacement parts on eBay if you don't have them already.

See my web site for opening the case and repairing the video.
