Subject: motherboard problem?

Question
I have a gateway 500x and when i power it up. it instantly goes to amber light on the front panel. I tried a different power supply and the same thing. Do you know what the problem could be? and if its the motherboard do you know where would i beable to find one online? which one?
Thanks,
Robert

Answer
It could be the motherboard, it could also be something else, have you tried unplugging the power to all the other devices like the hard drive, floppy, cd rom?

Ground yourself then take out the memory and any cards in the slots. Then power it up you should get a set of continuios beeps.

If you don't get the beeps, and the power led stays abmer then you MB is dead.

If you get the beeps and the power led goes green then it isn't your MB. Try installing the memory first, when you power up you should get a series of beeps that indicate that the video card is missing. If you get the beeps then install the video. Power up do you get the bios setup screen?

And so on adding back each card, then the drives.

I don't have a source for Gateway products, you can try eBay or do a search for your computer make and model, someone may be selling them.
